The HistoryLiberty HallAt the corner of Eden Quay stood Liberty Hall, a two-storey building belonging to the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. It was also the HQ for the Irish Citizen Army. Before the Rising James Connolly had stretched the famous banner across the front of the building, its bold black lettering declaring that they served neither King nor Kaiser. This was Connolly's answer to the knockers who accused revolutionaries of being in Germany's pocket. Liberty Hall was a thorn in the side of British authorities and Irish employers alike. Its halls and rooms were often used for meetings organised by workers groups and nationalist organisations. If a raid was expected the ICA would be on hand to stand guard. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was printed in the basement of Liberty Hall on Easter Sunday ready for distribution the following day. ![]() Liberty Hall with Irish Citizen Army on Parade.
