The History

Statue of James Connolly

James Connolly stands proudly upon his plinth on Beresford Place, opposite Liberty Hall. The statue was erected in 1996 and is cast in bronze. The great work is by the artist Eamonn O'Doherty and was commissioned by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions who raised finance from a wide variety of sources from the Communist Party of Ireland to the Carpenters Local New York.

Part of the 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour of Dublin includes a trip to the famous statue. Opposite stands Liberty Hall, where most of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army gathered on the morning of the Rising, Easter Monday. From here they went to their positions around Dublin City and took over various buildings. The statue of Connolly is seldom if never vandalized, which, in a major city is a great reflection on the respect that Connolly still commands from the people of Dublin. Visitors to the statue often remark that Connolly is similar to Lenin in his appearance but Connolly was famous worldwide before Lenin!
